Fellows Criteria in Europe
The SCOPE Fellows Scheme recognises those doctors who are experts in
the field of obesity management.
European Fellows are experts from across Europe who have been
nominated by a national association or have applied to become a Fellow.
Criteria to become a European Fellow are as follows:
(1) Clinical experience with the management of the overweight and
obese patient. Minimum duration of experience of 5 years.
(2) Training in medical speciality relating to obesity management (e.g.
internal medicine, endocrinology, diabetes, cardiology and hypertension,
psychiatry, primary care, pulmonary medicine, etc.)
(3) Engagement in scientific activities including participation and
presentation at national/international courses and congresses, etc.
(4) Five or more international, peer reviewed publications on obesity
or obesity-related diseases, preferably including clinical issues published
over the past 5 years, or 10 with no time limit.
(5) Membership of an EASO affiliated national association for the study
of obesity.
National Fellows is a further category for those candidates who
do not meet all the criteria specified for European Fellow status. Criteria
to become a National Fellow are as follows:
(1) Continuing clinical contribution to the management of the overweight
and obese patient. This will be demonstrated by one or both of the following:
- Candidates have established a clinical session (s) specific to weight
management, and are able to demonstrate on the basis of number of
patients managed and reports (preferably audits) that they adhere
to current European or National guidelines for obesity management
- Candidates have organised clinical meetings and/or clinical trials
in the field of obesity or obesity-related diseases.
(2) Training in a medical speciality relating to obesity management
(e.g. internal medicine, endocrinology, diabetes, cardiology and hypertension,
psychiatry, primary care, pulmonary medicine, etc.)
(3) Engagement in scientific activities including participation and
presentation at national courses and congresses, etc. Candidates should
have been involved at national level in lecturing to the local association
on a range of obesity related issues.
(4) Local publications contributing to obesity management literature.
(5) Membership of an EASO affiliated national association for the study
of obesity.
